We are currently living through a global climate crisis. Humanity’s most formidable challenge requires global action to preserve the Earth we inhabit. So when long-standing client Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) asked us to collaborate on a project to consolidate their eco-innovative portfolio, we were delighted to be involved. G+D is one of the market leaders in payment technology, connectivity, digital identities, and digital infrastructures. They manage over 400 million payment cards per year for over 180 different financial institutions.

THE IMPACT OF PAYMENT CARDS

Over 3 billion payment cards enter our ecosystem every year—the equivalent of consuming 1 million barrels of oil. Banks and fintechs can lead the financial services market in more eco-conscious practices—significantly impacting the environment.

BUILDING ON A SOLID FOUNDATION

For G+D, caring for the environment is not a new phenomenon. In 2018, they introduced a group-wide climate goal—to reduce emissions by 2022 to a level compatible with the two-degree limit set out in the Paris Agreement. Further to their ESG strategy, they have pledged to eliminate virgin plastic in their payment cards by 2030.

Adopting a more sustainable payment experience requires more than just payment card bodies made from sustainable materials. Every part of the payment journey, from acquisition to in-life payments and end-of-life card disposal, can be moved onto a more sustainable footing.

THE SOLUTION

We created a warm, optimistic, and human-led visual language to support our strategic, naming, content, and proposition work for the client. This look and feel was designed to depict the client’s eco-innovative PayTech offerings, from payment cards to eco-recycling. We developed a style that complements and mirrors G+Ds sustainable credentials, and elements of our created environments are used throughout all content to help deliver the narrative in an emotional and engaging way.
